Menuing Ideas for Regional Favorites: A New Face on a Philly Classic

It’s no surprise that the people of Philadelphia, PA take their cheesesteaks very seriously. In fact, many Philadelphians believe that if you are more than an hour outside of south Philly, you can’t enjoy an authentic sandwich.

That’s just one of the many characteristics associated with this beloved regional food. The classic cheesesteak consists of thinly sliced steak piled high on a long, thin roll and topped off with Cheez Whiz, the serious connoisseur’s topping of choice. While this traditional combination is a proven winner, a few twists have surfaced on the same streets where the cheesesteak got its start.

NEW TWISTS ON A REGIONAL FAVORITE:

  • The cheesesteak goes upscale. Many regional restaurants are changing up the traditional ingredients to be more upscale in appeal and taste, including a sandwich featuring shaved rib-eye, truffle whiz, caramelized onion and a cherry pepper mayo.
  • Go totally Philly. One adventuresome Philly eatery is gaining lots of attention with their signature Philadelphia Cream Cheese Cheesesteak.
  • No steak cheesesteaks. Vegetarians and meat eaters alike are enjoying alternative cheesesteaks for a healthier twist on this regional classic. For example, one Philly eatery is serving seitan “cheesesteaks” made with rosemary and garlic seared seitan, grilled onions, green peppers and vegan whiz served on an artisan hoagie roll.
