Allergen alert. As of January 1, 2023, federal law requires manufacturers to label as an allergen on packaged foods, including dietary supplements. Sesame joins eight other foods already declared as major food allergens by federal law. The other major food allergens are milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, wheat and soybeans.
Foods that contain sesame, or are derived from it, include benne, benne seed, benniseed, gingelly, gingelly oil, gomasio (sesame salt), halvah, sesame flour, sesame oil, sesame paste, sesame seed, sesamol, sesamum indicum, sesmolina, sim sim, tahini, tahina, tehina and til.
